Choose An Ulster County Bed And Breakfast For A Romantic Weekend

By Jocelyn Davidson

If you live in the New York City area, you probably know how good it can be for your soul to take an occasional break from the urban hustle and bustle. Some time in the countryside, inhaling all that clean air, can do wonders for recharging your batteries. You don't even have to travel very far for this. Simply book into an Ulster county bed and breakfast for the weekend and bliss is just an hour and a half away.

The county known as Ulster is within a 90-minute drive from the Big Apple. It's in the Catskills region and the Hudson Valley. Towns here include New Paltz, Rochester, Woodstock and Marlborough, as well as Kingston, which is the county seat. In between the larger towns you'll also find small hamlets full of rustic charm.

The area is just the place for you if you love being outdoors, no matter what the season. When the weather is warm, go hiking, biking or horse-riding or climb the Catskills for spectacular views. Alternatively, pack your fishing gear or rent a kayak and head to the river or one of the lakes. Winter time is snow time and the region is home to some great ski resorts.

Culture vultures will love the rich history and heritage of the area. Enjoy the scenery by taking the Catskill Mountain Railroad. Then visit museums such as the Empire State Railway Museum, the New York Trolley Museum and the Hudson River Maritime Museum, which tells you all about the days when the river was a major way to get agricultural produce from Kingston to the big city. You'll also find lovely heritage buildings, including Mohonk Mountain House and the wonderful Saugerties Lighthouse.

A romantic break needs great food and you'll be spoiled for choice in the region. This is still a farming area and in addition to all the fruit and vegetable farms and dairies, there are some charming vineyards and small breweries. If you prefer a one-stop shopping experience, stock up on goodies at a farmer's market. Also browse the antique stores and specialty boutiques and enjoy a rustic meal at a local restaurant.

Another idea for a great day or night out is to enjoy a live concert, of which there are plenty. In fact, the area also hosts some very popular festivals, including the Bellayre Music Festival. Whether you're into theater, music, fine art or food, you'll find an event or a festival to your liking.

There are different ways to get to the area. You can take one of the regular buses from New York City or travel by train to Poughkeepsie and then catch a bus from there to your destination. The best way to travel, however, is by car.

There's no bad time to visit and it all comes down to the activities you're planning on. Don't miss the region during the fall, though, to see the gorgeous display of colors. To avoid disappointment especially during this time of year, be sure to book in advance.
