Gymnastics started sometimes back in Greece, besides the word is derived from a Greek term, which when translated in English it means excising naked. Early athletes used to exercise while naked. Aerobics refers to performing organized maneuvers with the usage of rings, bars or other apparatus. Tumbling was performed by traveling troops of dancers, jugglers, and thespians. Various forms of acrobatics and tumbling were finally incorporated into circus. Before gymnastics were performed on international level they were practiced by various circus groups and individuals.

A system of aerobics known as floor exercise was invented and taught for medical benefits of the athlete. Free calisthenics, which entails exercising without hand apparatus like dumbbells, clubs, and wands. This form of gymnastics was originally not meant for competition but has evolved into what is currently referred to as floor exercise. Floor exercise these days is part and parcel of Olympic Games since 1932.

Pommel horse, horizontal bar, parallel rings, vaulting, and rings were amongst the first games to be contested at international stage in 18s. Men aerobics were first incorporated on the Olympic agenda in the 18s. Women calisthenics were introduced much later in the 19s. Men and women participated in similar events with the exception of balance beam, which was solely women event.

Aerobic championships are hosted at different levels ranging from school, university, club, college, international to national competitions. Modern aerobics features 6 events for male athletes and 4 events for female athletes. Men events lay emphasis on upper body flexibility and strength along with aerobics. Women events include vaulting horse, floor exercise, balance beam, and uneven bars.

International events have different age brackets. An athlete can be categorized as a junior or senior according to their age. Junior category includes athletes below the age of sixteen years while senior group comprises of people above sixteen years. Most gymnasts begin training at young ages and reach the peak in early twenties or late teens. Late teens refer to the age bracket between fifteen years to nineteen.
